Meet Tiffany Rea-Fisher

Tiffany Rea-Fisher is a go-to choreographer for major theater directors, including Carl Cofield (Best Director, N.A.A.C.P) and Saheem Ali (New York Theatre Workshop, Public Theater). She is an award-winning choreographer for theater, fashion, and music, and the Artistic Director of the Harlem-based, single-voice contemporary modern dance company, EMERGE125.

Rea-Fisher has been the Resident Choreographer with Classical Theatre of Harlem for the last 10 years, contributing to their productions of Macbeth, The Three Musketeers, A Christmas Carol In Harlem, Antigone, The Bacchae, Seize the King, Twelfth Night and Memnon. (For her choreography in Twelfth Night, The New York Times suggested she should have been nominated for a Tony Award.)

She has also choreographed for two consecutive Public Theater Public Works projects: Troy Anthony’s adaptation of Pericles, performed at St. John the Divine and directed by Cofield, and Benjamin Velez’s adaptation of The Tempest, directed by Laurie Woolery.

A 7-time consecutive AUDELCO award nominee, a National Dance Project Award winner, 2022 Toulmin fellow, Creatives Rebuild New York awardee, and John Brown Spirit Award recipient, Rea-Fisher has also been awarded a citation from the City of New York for her cultural contributions and was spotlighted in The Broadway Women’s Fund 5th annual “Women to Watch on Broadway’’ list.

Rea-Fisher curates for the Bryant Park Dance Summer Series, has creatively directed for companies such as Music from the Sole, and is also the Executive Director of the Adirondack Diversity Initiative (ADI): many things rolled into one, and jubilantly so.

CV

“Dance is power personified. My hope is that the next generation of dancers can start where I’ve arrived: knowing that our art form gives us the tools we need to acknowledge we are important and we belong.”

Press + Reviews

The New York Times

“Choreographed by Tiffany Rea-Fisher with her customary grace, it is woven more deeply than usual into the storytelling — as when we watch the death of the old king, Edward IV, enacted wordlessly — and into the mood of the performance.”

New York Stage Review

“Sinuous yet ritualistic choreography by Tiffany Rea-Fisher is rendered with dangerous abandon… They sometimes stamp on the metal platforms so boldly as to threaten to bring down the structures surrounding them, which is a perfect metaphor for this story regarding collective feminine power.”

Stupid Dope

“Rea-Fisher is recognized for her ability to create movement that reflects both cultural identity and collective spirit. Her choreography for Pericles draws inspiration from gospel traditions and the expressive energy of the Black church, channeling physicality into moments that transcend spoken dialogue.”

Picture This Post

“Choreographer Tiffany Rea-Fisher (artistic director of Elisa Monte Dance) uses five lithe, charismatic dancers to portray the people of Thebes and reflect on the emotional content of the piece. A choreographic highlight is a moment where the dancers travel assertively down the two ramps in single file, their bodies oscillating in strong, staccato movements.”

MANY THINGS ROLLED INTO ONE

”Rooted in modern dance as cultural birthright, I create from my full self; my Blackness, my womanness, my muchness, expressing a freedom that continually expands my artistry.”

Choreography

“People primarily go to the theater to escape, so I ask myself if I wanted to escape, what would I want to see? Empathy, joy, and athleticism.”

Including, but not limited to:
8 shows with Classical Theatre of Harlem(incl. The Three Musketeers, The Bacchae, Macbeth, Twelfth Night)
Pericles (Public Theater’s Public Works, Dir. Carl Cofield)
The Tempest (Public Theater’s Public Works, Dir. Laurie Woolery)
Gun & Powder (Paper Mill Playhouse, Dir. Stevie Walker-Webb)

Movement Direction

“My job is to be in support of the director’s vision. It allows for a lot of play.  Some people interpret the story through lights or through sound; I get to interpret it through movement. And that’s really special.”

Including, but not limited to:
Othello (Classical Theatre of Harlem, Dir. Carl Cofield)
Mary Speaks (Sheen Center, Dir. Christory Burris)
An Appointment with God (The Playwrights Realm, Dir. Saheem Ali)
In The Middle (The Lark, Dir. Saheem Ali)

Associate Direction

“I’ve always been inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, particularly the way artists moved fluidly between disciplines, each craft informing and elevating the others. I aspire to carry that spirit into my work by continuously learning and contributing in as many roles within the theater as I can.”

Including, but not limited to:
Antigone (Classical Theatre of Harlem @ Skirball, Dir. Carl Cofield)
A Christmas Carol in Harlem (Classical Theatre of Harlem @ Aaron Davis Hall, Dir. Carl Cofield)
Memnon (Classical Theater of Harlem @ Getty Villa, Dir. Carl Cofield)

Creative Direction + Curation

“I make decisions together with dancers. Everyone has a seat at the table, and it is a safe place for them to share their ideas. Dancers are sometimes silent vessels, and it is 100 percent my job to create a space where they can physically and vocally express themselves.”

Including:
Bryant Park Dance Summer Series
Music from the Sole
Naomi Funaki
